A very nice weekend, starting with Friday Night... [Sep. 6th, 2005|08:35 am]

...was had by us.

I'm feeling down about New Orleans...Corey and I can give money and my insurance company will match. I just feel otherwise impotent regarding the destruction and am in denial about its enormity.

Friday night (after teaching) Corey and I made our way up to Cooper's in Nevada City. The featured acts were the terrific Las Pesadillas and the Dead Hensons. Noah and crew played better than I've ever heard them...tight, explosive and focused. I love that band....sometimes the people they attract are annoying..some former stripper (the beer cups weren't the only things made of plastic in that bar) yelled out for freebird at the beginning, and Noah played "Sweet Home Go Fuck Yourself". I enjoyed that. There was a weird old Hippy in Tevas that kept dancing into us and staring at Corey and me instead of the band...strange. We kept moving, and so did he. Arrgh. I wish I could just ignore people sometimes...it really shouldn't affect me that some pitouli-soaked meth head thinks he's a great dancer and wants people to know it. Regardless, LP kicked my ass, and I can say I think that band is flawless. I wouldn't change a thing about them. A friend of mine has seen us twice and LP once or twice, and likes us (the Holy Men) better. I don't get that AT ALL. He told me that our songs all sound different and are listener-accessible....which is exactly my opinion about Las Pesadillas from Orangevale, California. Different strokes, I guess.

The Dead Hensons, however are a different matter. I really enjoy their music and performance...it's a great concept, and my generation, raised on the Children's Television Network, gets it. There's some really fun songs and very talented members.

They just suffer from R.G.S.

R.G.S. affects many bands that I'd otherwise think were fantastic...and one of my most pronounced fears is to be accused of being in a band that suffers from R.G.S.

R.G.S. stands for Redundant Guitarist Syndrome.

A redundant guitarist is rarely heard, usually only plays chords/parts that copy the other guitar player's thing and usually doesn't even sing. They usually own the P.A. or have some other indispensible service or specific, consistent fanbase that comes to the shows, making their removal nearly-impossible. Again, I'm afraid I fall into that category entirely too often, and that's why I hate R.G.'s so much. I'm probably the only person on earth that feels that way, but, that's me.

I want to be in that band. I get it. I'd contribute a lot more than their Prince Valiant-looking MFer. I guess I'll just work to be as non-redundant as possible in my band.

The rest of the weekend coming right up.

Come on, you know you're there to get the notes that Jeffry misses because he's too busy worrying about his weave unraveling. That's "insurance guitarist".

That's my evil snarky RG ...

I've considered booking into Cooper's, but Nevada City really is overrun by hippie Deadheads who are not particularly kind to flatlanders. There is a strong musical community up there and they would much rather see The Deadbeats or one of the local blues bands for the umpteenth time than pay attention to LP or THM.

Don't speak too soon ... you may be drafted soon enough.

For the record, you are not "RG"; I've wanted a second guitarist in the band since around 1994.
